Artist Statement
I would say my work is mainly about sublimation, or at least an attempt at sublimation.
I am interested in the psychology behind the creative instinct and find myself most connected to art generated by subconscious and free association techniques.
My work seeks to create a sense of rhythm and rapport between the mental process and its visual outcomes. I employ art psychotherapy techniques, meditative practices and my own writing as a basis for inspiration and a way of transcending boundaries between internal impression and external expression.
Art as a hardwired intuitive seeking system, holds particular fascination and I am often in a process of discovery, conversation and negotiation with myself and my field of experiment during the practice.
My work is often preoccupied with the idea of channelling organic instincts and images as honestly and spontaneously as possible, whatever form they may take.
It is perhaps due to this reason I don’t feel a need to identify with the limits of a particular medium or style other than that available to me at the time I am creating.
Analysis of my work is constantly informed by psychoanalytic research and art therapy goals, I have identified recurring themes of harmony and discord, isolation and belonging or simply seeking a more ‘flow’ based sense of being in the world.
Many of my paintings are in constant development, as i often find myself returning to them to add and in a way find the 'missing' elements that make them whole.
My illustrations are often narrative driven figurative forms, created through a combination of simple lines and decorative mark making techniques.
While my paintings are largely abstract and gestural works reflecting the forms of natural elements or evoking a state of mind.
Although I can’t say I have followed one particular artist, I have taken inspiration from the style and ethos of Surrealist and abstract expressionists such as Rene Magritte, Lee Krasner, Georgia O’keef and Louise Bourgeois; Their ability to communicate a hidden and mysterious depth and meaning behind the work.
I first became fascinated by automatic response in art a few years ago and have since then used this method to organically unlock subconscious ideas within an unplanned or slightly pre-planned structure.
Regarding my own experience of Unconscious techniques, I find the use of automatic and meditative processes key to creating spontaneous and authentic art. These ‘stream of consciousness’ techniques are often revealing in terms of yielding both habitual mental patterns and unanticipated creative outcomes.
I believe my own experience of psychoanalysis has benefitted me in both terms of wellbeing and artistic discipline and I find the Jungian, and more current, idea of the Unconscious as the basis of creativity and transformation a particularly appealing one.
I allow myself to employ the subconscious while keeping aware of the reasons both positive and negative behind this approach.
Combining intuition and spontaneity with a preconceived aesthetic drives me to keep experimenting with materials and techniques and find new ways of relating within my practice.
